About FreeVIN

FreeVIN is a free vehicle information lookup service. Enter any 17-character VIN and get back a structural decode of the number itself, official NHTSA specifications for that vehicle, and — where available in our database — auction history, pricing context, and an ownership cost estimate.

We built FreeVIN because used and salvage vehicle listings are often thin on detail. A lot number and a damage code don’t tell you much on their own. Pairing that data with the vehicle’s official specifications and comparable auction prices for the same make and model gives a much clearer picture before you bid or buy.

What we provide

  • VIN decoding — the structural breakdown of any VIN (WMI, VDS, check digit, model year, plant code, serial number).
  • NHTSA specifications — engine, drivetrain, body style, and safety equipment pulled directly from the official NHTSA vPIC database.
  • Auction context — for vehicles in our database, price comparisons against similar recent listings for the same make and model.
  • Ownership cost estimates — a rough annual estimate covering insurance, fuel, maintenance, and depreciation.
  • Buyer’s inspection checklists — practical things to check based on the reported damage type before committing to a purchase.

A note on accuracy

We pull vehicle specifications from NHTSA’s public vPIC database and auction detail from publicly available listings. We don’t independently verify every field, and data can be incomplete, delayed, or occasionally wrong — see our Disclaimer for details. Always confirm critical details (title status, odometer, damage) directly with the seller or auction house before making a purchase decision.
